Another that's closer to true eroticism than it is Pink Flamingos, Intimacy, which might just be the best acted film on this list, tempers its raw, carnal desire with something more approaching a traditional (albeit potent) love story, one that peters out in a to-the-bone numbness to make this one of the saddest, loneliest pictures on this list.
The power of this final session of intimacy ensures that Chéreau's film is not concerned with simply being graphic, instead looking beyond the sex and into the soul that accompanies it. As Jay realises that Claire will not leave her family, the pair have sex one final time: a searing, passionate, ultimately intimate (granting the film its title) f*ck at odds with the illicit nature of all the previous ones.
